Local 106 in Albany was chartered on April 23, 1902 and was one of 68 Locals chartered
in this period. Local 106 was chartered as a “mixed” local with jurisdiction over
stationary engineers as well as hoisting and portable engineers

Local 106 was founded in 1902 and has a current
membership of; approximately1800 members. Included are heavy equipment operators,
mechanics and surveyors in the construction field as well as stationary engineers
inside buildings. Most of our members work on construction projects and it also
has many members who work in shops, quarries and airports.
Our Local includes twenty counties in upstate New York. These counties are:
Albany, Broome, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, the Northern part of Duchess (to
the northern boundary line of the City of Poughkeepsie), Essex, Franklin,
Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer (east of a line north and south through the
railroad station at Little Falls), Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga,
Schenectady, Schoharie, Tioga, Warren and Washington.

The training schedule/course descriptions for 2000 was mailed to all members in
the October 2008 newsletter. In order to sign up for any of the scheduled classes,
you need to call the Training Fund at (518) 431-1044. You will then receive a written
confirmation.

offering an extensive list of courses at our new Glenmont facility and it is our
hope that more members will take advantage of these training opportunities to upgrade
their skills and thereby increase their chances for employment. As more and more
of the job opportunities require specific certifications, it is crucial that you
participate in the upgrade program in order to broaden your skill base and qualify
yourself for these positions.
If you received your initial forklift truck training, please check the date on your
card, as it is a 3 year certificate and you may need to attend a refresher class
this year.

CRANE COURSE

WEEK (240 hours) FIELD TRAINING
Beginner’s course designed to assist a journey member making a transition to crane
operation.
CLAMSHELL TRAINING/DRAG LINE
TRAINING

hour CLASSROOM 7 hours FIELD
This course is designed to train operators for hands-on in the basic operation of
a clamshell/drag line.
EXCAVATING
BEGINNERS
EXCAVATION Excavator & loader backhoe ……………. 8 hours CLASSROOM 16 hours FIELD
This course is designed for members making a transition to excavating equipment.
Topics discussed will include
Subpart P of the O.S.H.A. Standard as well as pre-op inspection, reading grade stakes,
types of excavating equipment
and trenching.. Also to train operators for hands-on in the basic operation of a
loader-backhoe and excavator.
TRENCHING & SHORING
4 hours CLASSROOM 8 hours FIELD
As our market share grows in the water and sewer industry, operators with trench
box experience will be needed. This
course will cover the O.S.H.A. Subpart P Excavation Standards as well as hands-on
training in the proper set up and use of a trench box during excavation.
DOZERS/GRADE STAKE
3 hour
CLASSROOM 21 hours FIELD
Basic operation of dozers under field conditions. Grade stake reading and grade
checking.
LOADER & SKID
STEER LOADER
2 hour
CLASSROOM 14 hours FIELD
A course designed to train operators for hands-on in the basic operation of a loader.
Designed to assist operators in
the safety, maintenance and operation of a machine with a standard loader bucket
and fork attachments.
DEFENSIVE DRIVING
6 hour CLASSROOM
Course designed to make vehicle operators safer and more aware of defensive driving
practices. National Safety
Council Program. Successful students are entitled to point reduction (DMV) as well
as insurance premium percentage
reduction.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE COURSES
Disaster
Site Worker Training
New Program. O.S.H.A. 7600 course designed for the worker on how work is conducted
on work zones/ projects such
as natural disaster: floods, hurricanes and terrorists attacks. Applicants must
have completed the 29CFR1910.120
HAZWOPER (HAZMAT 40 hour) and the O.S.H.A. 500 safety training 10 hour. This program
is a separate 16 hour program.
PIPELINE OPERATOR QUALIFICATION
6 hours
CLASSROOM
New D.O.T. Requirements call for the operators employed in either gas transmission
or distribution work to be evaluated
on 11 covered tasks relating to this industry. This is not a test of operating ability.
Recertification is required every 3
years. Prior pipeline experience is required to receive this qualification.
INITIAL FORKLIFT

Designed to train operators in safe operation and to be aware of hazards in the
work place. (O.S.H.A. FINAL RULE)
Effective December 1, 1999 Federal O.S.H.A. requires that all forklift operators
be trained and certified. In order to
receive this certification you must attend a technical class of 4 hours and pass
a written test and a practical evaluation.
Upon passing both tests you will receive a forklift card.
FORKLIFT
RECERTIFICATION – EVERY THREE YEARS (NO GRACE PERIOD)............ 4 hours CLASSROOM
Federal O.S.H.A. requires that all certified forklift operators be evaluated every
three years. You must attend a 4 hour
technical class and pass a written test before the expiration date of your current
certification.
HAZARDOUS WASTE TRAINING

actual asbestos abatement project
doing “tear out” duties. An 8 hour annual refresher training class is required.
A $50.00 license fee is required annually.
